I have been looking for some teething cookies for Roxy lately and several people told me to find Zwieback cookies. Well I looked at target, Walmart and publix and I could not find those or any other brand of teething cookie. Apparently Zwieback cookies stopped being made in 2010 according to google. We did try a Gerber graduate cookie and it took her 2 seconds to break a piece off so that won’t work.
I decided to make some of my own so I looked at several recipes.
I tried a simple one this morning but had two problems with it. First problem was when I tried it, it was harder than the cookie she broke off, but still softer than my liking. The second problem was when I came home from the trail this is what I saw:
3/4 of the cookies were gone! Apparently my dog thought they were dog treats!
So this afternoon I tried another batch with some rice syrup added and a little less water in hopes they would be tougher to break. It worked! So here is the recipe that turned out the best:
1 cup flour
1 cup rice cereal
1/2 cup brown rice syrup (molasses would work too)
3 Tbsp canola oil
1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
1 tsp vanilla (optional)
1-3 Tbsp water
Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees.
Mix flour, cereal, cinnamon, and vanilla.
Add oil and syrup and mix until blended. Add water one Tbsp at a time until you get a thick dough. Knead dough for a couple minutes.
Roll out dough to 1/2″ thick and cut into desired shapes.
Place on parchment paper on cookie sheet and place in oven for 30-35 minutes or until they start to slightly brown.
