So I just experienced a sleep deprived carb loading session. I am currently on vacation, which usually means being a little lenient on food choices, but I have a goal to lose this baby weight and have been very mindful of my food choices. Being on vacation also usually means more sleep, however when you have an infant it can mean the opposite. This trip has proved that for me, I am averaging 4-5 hours of broken sleep a night, and with today being the 4th day in a row, it just added up and I felt exhausted. I have worked out every day on vacation so far but today I just did not have the energy. There has been a bag of bagels on the counter in the kitchen of our house for the past 3 days and I haven’t even looked at them. Just now I couldn’t help myself and they were even stale! I have hardly had bread lately, because like I said I am still trying to lean out more. And I know you may be thinking, oh big deal she had a bagel… Well, I kept going back all afternoon and ended up eating three of them!! What?! I hate to even write that but it’s true.
This is all because I haven’t slept a lot lately. When you don’t get enough sleep, your brain and body is tired and it is looking for quick energy (carbohydrate). Your brain’s primary fuel source is glucose (carbohydrate) and if it has been over active and not allowed to have restorative sleep then of course it needs fuel to keep you going.
As a culture, I don’t think we sleep enough. Since we have so much to ‘get done’ every day, with work, home, family, friends, and social media, we go to bed too late and wake up too early. And with so many distractions of television, computers and smart phones (this one could be a whole blog post itself), the quality of our sleep is many times disrupted.
Whether you are at home or on vacation, make it a priority to sleep enough to help you lose fat or to prevent you from gaining it. Turn off those electronics more often to enjoy a better quality of sleep! Sleep more and have more energy, better workouts, more weight loss, higher performance levels at work, and many other benefits.
Looks like my goal is to get this little girl to sleep a little longer so I can too. No more bagel binges for me!
